I've waited for something like Alternative 4, but this album fucked all my expectations. It's the worst thing Anathema ever made. Too simple, too sweet, even the cover artwork ... it's just not Anathema style (in my opinion of course). A fine day to think who they want to be, Anathema or Mr.Big?

this album is very different from the others.more phsychodelic, less distortioned but more melancholic.ideal for suicide with the chaotic lyrics and the fabulous vocal of Vincent.

ANATHEMA – A Fine Day To Exit
(Music For Nations Records)
After having seen Anathema perform at the Biebob I wasn’t really able to review this album in a very objective way because their gig was so damn brilliant, I simply have to convince you of this band’s talents. Through the albums “Alternative 4” and “Judgement” I got acquainted with Anathema’s new musical direction and the beautiful contrast between piano and electric guitar along with Cavanaugh's voice got me going a lot. I like this style a lot better than their more heavy approach on albums such as “Serenades” although I believe Anathema have not written a single bad composition in all the time they exist (which is a long time already by now and they’re only getting stronger apparently). I remember seeing an At The Gates/Anathema/My Dying Bride tour report on Headbanger’s Ball years and years ago (those were the days!) and being so very much impressed by the live version of the song “Sleepless”, that I’ve been a fan ever since. After the lousy period holidays are when it comes to good music being released, “A Fine Day To Exit” is now at the very top of my play list, even beating the new Transatlantic CD in being my album of the month. Of course you have to take the time to dig a bit deeper into it all, because when listening to the disc for the first time it may sound a bit monotonous due to the fact that most of the songs are pretty slow and melancholic. Maybe you could say “A Fine Day To Exit” sounds a bit more commercial than its preceders, Radiohead influences (“OK Computer”) are present in some songs, but Anathema have been playing this kind of music for such a long time that we could ask ourselves the question whether Anathema haven’t been influencing them instead of it being the other way around. Anyway, what difference does it make, right? And of course Radiohead isn’t the worst band to be compared with…Guitarist Danny Cavanagh expresses the band's maturing: "The production is different this time - the music is more varied. Our work is definitely a group effort, but it's also a combination of individual work. The creativity is much more widespread, it's tranquil at times, more mature & diverse and the lyrics are further advanced from anything we've previously done. We've really tried to push the envelope with this one." While 'Judgement' is this really dark, very sad and deep album which depicts all the emotions humans can feel and 'Alternative 4' was this album about having the keys to your own life, regretting your past - 'A Fine Day To Exit' turns all those emotions upside down going to the opposite direction. Of course all of the songs have an atmosphere of their own, woven together by a melancholic undertone, but there’s also a ‘I’ve done some things wrong, but hey that’s all in the past now’ kind of attitude. I don’t think it’s really necessary to review this album song by song but I can maybe tell you that when listening to “Looking Outside Inside” Tool and A Perfect Circle come to mind especially thanks to the drums building up to a great climax. A female singer is also present in the song “Barriers” and the combination between Cavanagh’s dramatic vocals and her sweet and calm voice sounds absolutely marvellous. If I’m truly honest I have to say that I didn’t find a song as good as “One Last Goodbye” but how can you ever top a tune like that, so we shouldn’t feel bad they didn’t succeed in doing that. As a whole this is Anathema’s most complete and mature disc ever, another masterpiece in what is becoming an enormously rich discography that many bands should (and probably are) jealous of. If you’re into their latest albums, you’ll certainly dig this one as well…

My marking : 9,5/10
Lyrics : “I can feel my chest pushing inwards, sucking through my skin into my brain”

I believe When some one said that there is nothing to feel with this one, there is no blood in their veins!
with this album, anathema goes to the deeper part of the
emotions...deep...sensetive..mature....
infact it wasn't what I expect from anathema,
but it realy touch very inner side of my soul...
some song like "a fine day to exit"...temporary peace...
Lyric:The Wave washing over, half forgotten memories..
I give 9/5 of 10
