this is for me one of the best albums of this band and from all the doom metal scene.it is more quiet than others like TURN LOOSE THE SWANS but with some of the most sad melodies you can hear are in this album.the gutural voice in this album has disappeared but the clean, sorrowful voices are wonderful and show us why is this band is one of the best in doom metal.perhaps, with anathema, the best.

An album which could have been a 100% enjoyable masterpiece, were it not for Aaron's vocals. The man seems to have simply overestimated his abilities to sing in a "clean" voice. His singing is often off key and significantly reduces my enjoyment of the music, althouh I don't deny certain effectiveness at times. Almost all other aspects shine - although it can't be really said that performance includes examples of exceptional playing skills, the songs are very well written and show high level of talent for creating the kind of atmosphere this band is famous for. Conclusion: 7.5/10, would be for 1.5 higher if the vocals were as quality as on the last two albums (34.788%... and TLATEOTW).

To me this record is definitely the best beautiful metal album ever written and goes to the same level with King Crimson's first masterpiece. Only in this album the chemistry of MDB is perfect and Martin Powell gets enough space and time he deserves. The songs are very well crafted and not that usual riff-after-riff stuff. It is sad they didn't continue with this style, but maybe there was nowhere to go from here, after all one Angel and the Dark River is enough for one band.

Is the best CD I ever listened to.The only thing I don't understand and even like is the ambigue finish of "The cry of mankind" track. My favourite song is "Two winters only"...where my everything founds its own depression and meaning.

This album was a disapointment to me after Turn Loose..
and it took me a while to get it through, though im glad i did because IT IS a great album by it's own.

it has great production, and solid My Dying Bride-Standards-songwriting.
this is just a fine example of a brilliant, almost classic doom release.

great album, a sea to suffer in and your shameful heaven are the best songs on the album

This Cd is so beautiful, and it is one of my favorites by MDB. Holy god, this cd starts out with "The Cry of Mankind", and it opens with a melancholic, reverbertated riff which goes out through the entire song. The ending of the song is kinda questionable and pointless, but it's not a scratch to this flawless cd. Then comes "From Darkest Skies", which is equally good, and then comes on track 3 on of my favorites on the album, "Black Voyage", the violin passage on this song is so beautiful, and it only gets better through out the cd. "A Sea to Suffer In" is depressing, and great. By the way, Aaron does not use death vocals on this cd, well atleast not on the songs that were originally on the cd, some of the digi-pack extras have death vocals. Then comes track 5, my absolute most favorite song on this cd, "Two Winters Only". Word cannot describe this song, and my love for it. My Dying Bride are truly one of the best Dark Romanticism bands out there, and true Doom Metal. After that great masterpeice is "Your Shameful Heaven", it starts out with the violin on a very melancholic yet beautiful note, and then quickly jumps into rather fast paced Doom fuckin Metal. On the digi it has live songs, and a studio song "The Sexuality of Bereavement", which is a Doom-Death masterpeice. In other words, this is a must have. You can not die until you have heard this, and you can not die with out this playing.
11/10

Without question the greatest doom metal album ever made. The songs sound 200% better live, amazing shit.

Sometimes there are albums that for many reasons become masterpieces. In this case the production is not good, the artwork is very simple and only has 6 tracks ( 7 in the limited digipack ), but each minute is delicious and special.
'The cry of mankind' has all the elements to be one of the best songs written ever, even the final atmospheric part is masterful. When Aaron says 'this is a weary hour...' and the music is going slower... what a moment.
And 'Black Voyage' is another masterpiece, the middle part is weird but the whole song rules.
A special mention to the excellent extra song 'The sexuality of bereavement', recorded during TLTS sessions.
Not a weak track, not a minute without intensity, great song-writing and the violin that makes the music so unique.
And yeah, was the first MDB CD I listened to, I would pay anything to live those moments again.

What can i say when an album starts with a song like "Cry Of Mankind"? But not only from this astonishing breath-taking song does this album lives of, the rest of them are all excellent, there are a few parts that i would neglect, though, what the hell, the whole song turns out to be excellent!
MDB are the kings of doom, doubtlessly

Lover put a knife in my hand
Lay down right there, that's my command
Do as I say in this blood play

I love MDB, and this is my favorite album. I am sick of all the new gen calling this beautiful music EMO. It doesn't make any sense. Just because they are sad, crushed, and depressed doesn't make them emo. Whoever even says that expression (emo) needs to get their face bashed in by a big fist with lots of gothic rings on each finger. My Dying Bride have helped me out of a lot of situations (basically calming me down) so that I am still here on Earth, and am a decent person. I don't have any piercings, don't wear makeup, and have short hair. So, wear is this EMO sh*t I hear about??? Not here.

One of the best albums I've ever heard.
