If you like the former works of Agalloch, you will like this stuff, too. It's not so excellent like "The Mantle" (it was more structured and somewhat "wholer", with a more characteristic atmosphere), and I was a bit disappointed after the first few listening... But give time for this album, it's worthy for it.
There metallic parts of the music are a bit harder and faster(especially in the first one third of the album), while the ambient parts are softer and more silent than on "The Mantle". The vocal themes are as various as we got used to it, growling, whispering, lot of clear voice-themes and sometimes desperate howling are also apperaing at the album.
I think that the most unusual track is the second, the "Falling Snow", and by this song they were surely affected by the earlier Katatonia stuffs (Discouraged Ones, etc.). But this isn't a mistake, and this was the first song i have met from this album and the first favourite from it, too :)
So check it!

This new album my Agalloch will leave you speechless. While I was kind of expecting Agalloch to take on a more friendly approach considering their last release was dominated by clean vocals and a more accessible feel, this album is not for the faint of heart. It takes the most depressing aspects of "The Mantle" and amplifies them 10 fold. This album starts off kind of heavy but flows so well that by the end of the album you'll be melted against whatever you're sitting in. The last song is so 'doomed' out and nihilistic! nothing purer has ever been recorded. "THE GOD OF MAN IS A FAILURE!" Masterpiece #2 for Agalloch.

Incredible, outstanding masterpiece. If you don't have it you can't call yourself a metal fan

After perfect "The Mantle" i thought it just can't be nothing better from Agalloch. Lucky i was wrong. The "Ashes against the grain" is much more better (if "better" is a good word). Album is very, very deep and beautiful, expressive. Paradoxically in this cd is much more guitars and less experiments with diffrent instuments. Its more simplified but also more expanded in arrangements. Just perfect!
10/10
