Maybe I've got psychological issues, but I simply cannot stand this album. Asphyx sounds like they are trying to be halfway in-between Obituary and At The Gates with the slow, grinding music and the Svenskå distortion. The music is, to me, completely trite and unengaging. There is very little variation and nothing leaps out at me as being original or exciting. I literally fell asleep listening to this. Save your money and get something from Morbid Angel or Death. "The Rack" is one of the most Brutal, Raw, Barbaric, Heavy, Hateful Death Metal albums ever, just listen to Martin Van Drunen's vocals, it sounded like he was being tortured throughout the recording of this masterpiece. This is what Death Metal is and should be just plain BRUTAL!! It absolutely blew me away with it's intensity, originality en heavy doominess. The vocals are heavenly (although you can discuss about the accuracy of that word in deschribing death metal) brutal. After 15 years, this album still stands the test of time. I lend to all newcomers in the death metal scene who never heard of them, coz with this album Asphyx set the standards. There's no use in comparing them with a Morbid Angel or a Death (killer bands in their own right) in my opninion, this album just keeps getting better.
