Review by: Sad spirit

Ok I guess this is ok. Varg is a stupid nazi. I mean whatever, thats his opinion. Maybe if he wasnt so closeminded I would respect his music a little more.

An excellent first album

The "burzum" CD is a very very good first album of Count Grishnackh! All the songs are true black metal! In my opinion it's one of the Black Metal Legendary-CDs! ...and the cover-art is brilliant!.....Perhaps Varg has a strange opinion and he is the murderer of Euronymous, but the music he created is pure true BLACK METAL!....Hailz to the Count!...

Review by: Eidolon

A sparkle that lit the great fire in norwegian black metal. Composed at an era when one wouldn't be taken serious if mentioning names such as Bathory, Varg Vikernes's debut is probably the start of norwegian black metal. Raw production, epic sounding drums, lyrics that approach suicide through the world of imaginatory tales and a voice resembling an attacking wolf(varg). Norway's blackmetallers start to smile cunnigly, the way that a wolf smiles seeing its prey...

Heil! This is my absolutely favourite album.Killing vocals, true Norwegian riffs.Fucking great!!!This is TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL!!!And something about Varg:He is not a stupid nazi, but a person who still believes in the pagan revival and who knows that we must destroy judeo-christian filth. You can write your opinion to wehrmacht88@freemail.hu

Review by: Beyto

Seems like Mr. Varg Vikernes spent too much time thinking that his Dungeon and Dragons caracters were real... I have only two words to decribe this album....absolutely horrible...you better spend your time and money in something less stupid than this crap

Review by: zamzack

Varg became a nazi in 1995/96. But about the album, it rules. Its great ass kicking, except the instrumentals suck (except domiinus sathanas). Best songs? ea,lord of the depths, spell of destruction, war and stemmen fra taarnet.

Review by: sir.antichrist

This is burzum's first full album. It is really cold and dark it travels your right through ancient forest of norway.Grishnack is a great musician it's a pitty though he stopped producing that good atmospheric and dark music.Ea lord of the deeps, spell of destruction, war all are real BM classics

Review by: Lord Storm

War, the minute long The Crying Orc, A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit were the first songs i heard off this cd. This is the best CD, all classics, the best short song is WAR and the longest A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit, torturous vocals, primitive but genius riffs, and yes good lyrics. Varg is a stupid nazi now, but let's remember him as the young true black metaller he was whenever we hear this great album.

I agree with Sad spirit, Raveshnal, Eidolon, biochemist, celtic-frost, euronydead, sir.antichrist, Lord Storm, fosvart, the fog. Nazism in its nowadays form sucks for sure, but Varg really became a nazi after he created his best albums.
The album itself is great, very dark, grim and furious, and songs are different from each other, but each style is used by Varg with great skill and talent, be it fast and aggressive BM (Ea, Feeble Screams), just aggressive metal (War), slow but dark and atmospheric (Lost Wisdom), sorrowful (Crying Orc), or dark ambient noise (Dungeons Of Darkness). A Lost Forgotten... is a mix of agressive (beginning) and melancholic (most song) styles, and Channeling is the only song i think to be neither bad nor good.
The info about the album contains mistakes. "A Lost... - only in original version" - This is 50% true, the song exists on the album, but not in the version which was on original DSP release. All (i think so) copies of this album which are being pressed and sold now are just copies of Misanthropy Productions re-release. It also contained Aske EP as bonus, but Aske is still a separate release, it mustn't be treaten as a part of Burzum.

hm, this Album is fuckin great Black Metal. the sound sucks a bit but it makes a cool atmosphair. very sad that Varg is such an asshole. i hate this guy and his opinion but his music is good. Im from Germany and if i would wear a burzum shirt, everyone would call me a nazi. sad,sad..

Review by: Nattefrost

Classic and great album from the Norwegian count, though the sound is a bit simple. The text writing is great also, and all the way through it is Burzum as we want it to be. But I sometimes wonder why we are given completely uninteresting tracks like “The Crying Orc” and “Dungeons of Darkness”, which in my opinion is nothing else but unnecessary filling.
But in all this one IS classic black metal from one of Norway’s great artists.

A great album.. Like every one of Burzum's early years..
I dont care whether he killed Mr.Mayhem. I also like and listen early Mayhem.

Review by: Kurja

A fucking must have for the Black Metal collector elite... True, the infomous Count did kill the godfather Euronymous but besides being a fucking close minded bullshit nazi/heathen fuck Varg is a true musical mastermind. Every song on this debut weaves a spell of destuction that captivates the listener almost like a drug. by the end of the cd the listener will find him/her self crawling weakly back to the play button for another dose.. 10/10 horns down

FUCK YA!!! this is burzums best album if u dont get this you are a dumbass with shit tast.

This is the first official release of the one-man band Burzum. This album is the one of Burzum's discography closest to black metal. What could I say about this release? It's a masterpiece, the songs are cold and cruel, with haunting vocals. My favourite songs are "Ea, Lord of the Dephts" and "My Journey to the Stars", but there isn't a bad song in the whole album. And this is only the first Burzum's effort: the next ones are even better... I would give this cd 98/100

I admire myself how much stupidity and ignorance lurks around here... People comes over and freshly post ANY amount of pseudo-reviews on both Varg himself & his music...you just can't hate the guy and love his music so easily...what kind of stupid fuck shits on Varg's pagan/racial philosophy on one side and still praises black metal misanthropic philosophy???? Have you ever noticed that both share the same ANTICHRISTIAN/ANTIHUMANISTIC ROOT ???? You want the entire mankind crushed by Satan but not by Odin ???? What the fuck does that mean??? What Varg has done seems to be evolving into something that began in black metal and though musically changed, conceptually HAS MATURED INTO SOMETHING NEW, which root is still the same but it has been expressed more freely that close minded old black metal oozy shit (for you all who like to talk about close minded) !!!!!!!

this album kicks ass. I think it is definatly one of his best but doenst beat (HLTO). and ok he may of ruined mayhem but it doesnt make his music atomaticly shit. sure you can hold a grudge against him but you surley cant deny that he is a very talented musicain.

Well, this is in my opinion the best Burzum release, for anyone thats new to Burzum, this is the place to start...personally i think the ambient tracks on this are rather weak, though ive heard much worse... but, more importantly, the majority of this album is true norwegian black metal in its purest form! One of the finest Black Metal albums from one of the Finest Black Metal artists...
Stand out Tracks: Stemmen Fra Tarnet, Ea, Lord of the Deeps
Hail the originators of True Norwegian Black Metal!

Review by: natte_skygge

An excellent first album. Much more raw and typical "black metal" then his hvis lyset tar oss or filosofem. Although the riffs are generally pretty simplistic, the over-all arrangement of the songs isn't. They are all quite epic and go through a lot of tempo- and moodchanges.

A pity this is only available for a normal price if you buy the re-release. Because the aske EP wasn't simply added to this album but 'integrated' in a rather clumsy manner, the original order of the songs has been messed up. As some of you might know, each Burzum album was created as a whole, designed to slowly push your mind into a dream-state. To re-create this experience, I suggest you program the tracks in the original order when listening to this album.

This is Burzum's first album and a great debut... Varg truly is a musical mastermind. The songs from the original "Burzum" album are really atmospheric and harmonic. I could say that Varg's vocals torture ears but they fit the music well. The "Aske" part is a bit boring, but this is still an excellent album, I'd give it 9/10

one of the best black metal debuts i ever heard.i dont suggest this to cradle of filth and dimmu borgir fans, this true old school BM !!!the only thing i dont get is that the song WAR sounds ecsactly like BATHORYs NECROMANCY.i dont understand why vikernes did that, maybe im misunderstund.cause theres a song called WAR on bathorys debut too.so if its not a cover then what is it?anyway,i dont know how will this cd sounds to the new wave of black metal fans but back then was so fuckin good for the scene.hail BURZUM!!!

Review by: sotiricon

This album is disturbing as hell. The Count's vocals will never be topped in terms if sheer anguish - not that they're really any good technically. The emotions here are darker than the blackest of holes and sometimes it is almost unbearable. Some tracks, like 'War' seem almost punk influenced by their simple song structure (don't tell Varg or he'll kill me!!) while others have the ambient quality that dominates his later (jailbird) sound. Ea lord of the depths is a scary track. My farvorite on here is "My journey to the stars" which exemplifies Burzum's actual song writing talent, emotion and the epic quality that can later be found on songs such as Hvis Lyset Tar Oss.
