this album fucking sucks balls!! i love most of cof's other stuff but now they have just taken a different direction and it is terrible. | Review by: morbz Evil-speaking minds assert that Cradle Of Filth make the same kind of albums for years, but this theorem can be put in the waste-paper basket from now on. Maybe Dani and his mates had the feeling that it was time to unveil some - doubtless as dark - but unknown sides of their musical universe. 'Thornography' is a masterly album, never before Cradle Of Filth sounded that fresh and various, even remarkable accessible in terms of Cradle Of Filth music and less hectic too. However, all this without losing their own identity and that is a severe achievement. Nothing strange going on initially. The album opens with an orchestral intro and 'Dirge Inferno' that starts at maximum velocity in a well-proved way, inclusive biting vocals, slightly dissonant bass lines, drum paces like hell and strongly mixed guitars. A robust track but not a surprise. Also in 'Tonight In Flames' (with very accentuated, impressive guitar lines and fetching vocals) and 'Libertina Grimm' (familiar and quite hectic track with charming piano parts) the evolution of the band is careful and little. I did have the impression that Dani sings less high, snapping and excited, all this for the benefit of pure emotion. In 'The Byronic Man' we even hear some normal vocals, but this is thanks to a vocal contribution of Ville Valo of Him. And yet… a dark low voice, semi spoken fragments of text, a slower, menacing rhythm… this is not repeating themselves, that's for sure. That is why the extensive 'I Am The Thorn' is a challenge for every experienced listener. You are sucked into a whirlpool of different moods and rhythms and just at the edge of becoming long-winded they swallow the bait with a few sudden rhythm changes and vocal lines which haunt you forever. And mark you, we are only halfway this groundbreaking, boundless album that has a length of more than an hour. But real surprises are yet to come. 'Cemetary And Sundown' could have been part of a Paradise Lost album if we forget the unique voice of Dani for one moment. The melodic guitar riffs and old gothic vocals verge to Sisters Of Mercy too. 'Lovesick For Mina' has, in its quality of tragic love song, a romantic piano fade out. With its pussyfoot pace and dark threatening vocals, it sure is a compelling song. Mood changes in the nearly mirthful 'The Foetus Of A New Day Kicking' which happens to be a perfect single choice because of its undeniable Iron Maiden riffs and fetching choruses. On this album, one can also meet with the first instrumental track that Cradle Of Filth ever recorded. Only a gloomy narrative intro. After that, violins, piano and guitars are the next highlight. This is catchy but desperate as well. In some parts, violins have an apocalyptic, chaotic timbre, a few moments later they touch your heart and balm your wounds. An outstanding track! 'Under Huntress Moon' is built on an 'Alma Mater' (Moonspell) allied riff, diverse vocals (also a bit of sensual vocals of Sarah Jezebel Deva; never mellifluous, always enigmatic) and fast riffs. Although all the songs have that non-effaceable Cradle Of Filth trademark, you will not find any blastbeats on 'Thornography'. As occluding track they did a wondrous version of 'Temptation' of Heaven 17 (and that is a commercial song indeed) when Dani reveals himself as a contemporary Alice Cooper. Like I suggested earlier, not any trace of stagnation is notable on this new record. The majority of albums open their shrine of precious contents after a few spins, but it seems to me that this one gets more complex every time I listen to it, interlarded with hardly notable and ingenious details. A bit tricky, indeed, and that is really typical for the band. Cradle Of Filth is back with a vengeance! I really wonder what friends and foes will write about this. It was an agreeable surprise for me! Review by: blacksoul666 This fucking cd sucks bleeding ass big time. I realy liked cruelty and dusk and her embrace and sure midian had some good tracks. And the others albums were ok. Nymphetamine was pretty much shit to but in no way as bad as this album. The songs are pretty simple and ofers nothing. And beside that it sounds way to mainstreem. Nymphetamine kinda hit the mark with mainstreem but still it has its charms. This goes beyond. Its a cradle of shit!!! Review by: Crushed Cold Flesh This might just be there worst album yet. Dani's grunts sound like a zombie getting fucked and he grunts a little to much. Under Huntress Moon was the only decent song on there. Liv Kristine of Theatre of Tragedy returns for the song Temptation. Basically a continuation of Nymphetamine's crap and they manage to make even crapier catchy riffs. Waste of money and time. Review by: goatboy057 I just wanted to say something about THORNAGRAPHY. I was looking forward to see wat Cradle had done with their new album. I completely love every single song they have made, YES including songs like Of Dark Blood and Fucking, from The Principle to Nymphetamine. I also have all albums, even Live Bait and Lovcraft. Now the album itself. Under Pragnant Skies She Comes Alive Like Miss Leviathan - The intro, cool title, but not a very goor intro. The band didn't write it by them selves, I don't care, but it is not as good as their older intro's, like At The Gates of Midian. It also doesn't fit in the tracklist. Its kind of misplaced. They also have put a little piece of their intermezzo She Mourns a Lengthening Shadow from their V Empire EP in the middle. Strange... Dirge Inferno - I listened this track on their site and I love it! The guitars are very well played, the melodies are nice and it will be in your head very long when you listen it. Almost at the end, some strange electronic sounds are thrown in to make it, well, different. Tonight in Flames - I had to get used to this song very much. It just is strange. But the more I listened it, the more it grew on me and after hearing it live, i loved it. It has a calm, silly refrain, what also will be in your head very easy. Just after the middle, there is a cool piece of piano, with Dani actually singing very peacefull. But then they just make it very dissonant and toxic-like. Very cool Libertina Grimm - Very cool fearitale-inspired song. Cool lyrics, fast pieces and a really nice refrain. Also a very harsh and cruel song with a nice orchestral piece in the middle. The end is a sad message from Dani. Cool song Byronic Man - This is one of the most argued about songs Cradle have ever made. Ville Valo would have killed the whole album. Well I think he did'nt. Its a very nice part when Dani and Ville are singing together. Also the refrain is cool. I am the Thorn - COOL! Nice one, maybe the nicest of all. Very guitar orientated, heavy and harsh. I like it a lot. Nice lyrics. Dani is the king! Especialy the part with the gun load sound in the middle is nice. After that cool lyrics, cool solo in the end, nice pices with the ''I am not the hand of god, I am the thorn'' spoken words. Cemetery and Sundown - Very strange but cool song. Dani speaks in a high, silly voice after the beginning. Also the strange, very short guitar piece after ''Cemetry and sundown'' let me laugh very hard. Also a computer Sarah is added. Cool. Lovesick fro Mina - This song is a tale about the Mina Harker out of Bram Stoker's ''Dracula''. It is very cool. I like the strange intro, the part after that, and actually the rest too. The coolest song of all. It made me first think about something I will tell later. The Foetus of a New Day Kickng - COOL! Very happy, nice and beautifull lyrics. I didn't believe that this was no cover first, but now i see, it is very Cradle-esque. Rise of the Pentagram - Nice speech by Pinnhead, the rest is in my opinion a bit too long. I liked it very much, but it is irritating me now, and i only listened it a few times. There are nice parts, like the really cool violins after the second brake, but too long overall. Under Huntress Moon - NICE! The Cradle standard song, and also the only one with some orchestra behind it. Thats something i do not like from THORNOGRAPHY. They didnt use much coir/violin/cello/etc. But the spoken parts of Sarah are just ''shiver down your spine'' parts. Really cool, she is great (on cd! Live absolutely NOT) Temptation - HAHAHA cool cover. I dont get it why it is on the normal version, it is even more misplaced than the intro. I listened the original version and my love for CoF reached explodable heights because they just did a very good job! THORNOGRAPHY itself: pro's: -nice guitars over the whole album -good songwriting -nice lyrics! -brilliant surprises (temptation, etc.) -length of the album -cover and booklet contra's: -lack of orchestra -lack of Sarah -verse/chorus/break/chorus style, i hate it! -intro isn't fitting in My discovery was that the way the songs are built up is similar to NYMPHETAMINE. Lovesick for Mina/Swanson for a Raven Byronic Man/Nymphetamine Libertina Grimm/Medusa and Hemlock I am the Thron/Nemesis and so on. Strange... I would give it: 87/100 Review by: Muggende Vlieg Well, I can't say I was exactly awaiting the new COF, especially after my utter disappointment with Nymphetamine. After listening to the first few tracks, I get almost bored - nothing really new to hear and the song structures were way too predictable. Either way, the 5th song starts and things start to pick up quite a bit. They have guest vocalist 'Him' on this CD which actually ends up sounding alright. From there, I have to say that the CD is continuously interesting and enjoyable. I am the Thorn, Lovesick for Mina are some great tracks. All in all, after a few listens the album is actually alright but the second half just destroys the first portion. 7/10 Review by: shanewick Total crap!! Something between Blackneed Heavy Metal and Doom Metal. The tragedy is bigger becouse there is no gothic drama in the music which was unique for craddle Review by: kiril Whew, and I thought Nymphetamine was bad but this is utter shit. Their older albums werent too bad. They can go fuck themselves now. Review by: shnaz
