"The Mind's I" is the second masterpiece after the Gallery which in my opinion the best album. | This work of sensible art totally deserves its name. All album is full of a mystical dark & sad atmospheric sound. Growling style has reached an artistry level with this one. Female vocals are present but not much. DT has absolutely created good melodic structured chaos again! The best melodic songs are: Constant, Insanity's Crescendo, The Mind's Eye, and Tidal Tantrum. Constant is probably a shocking song! The short melodic entrance then beautifully grows into a something angry, big and wise! Thou shall listen to understand! Hedon has deep questioning lyrics. It is totally build on a oscillated melody that will surround you when you allow it to grow on you. Insanity's Crescendo is a heavenly ballad that has 2 female vocalists. The lyrics are the best you can dream on earth! Very deep, extremely chaotic, totally good! The Mind's Eye is probably the reason for the album title. Notice the wordplay on "Eye". This is an instrumental clean tone song. The innocent melody captures your soul deep inside. This song tells something about other worlds, far away, something untouched. The existance of this song is alone proves the differance of DT among other posers! Tidal Tantrum is a short song that has strong melodies and the same deep touching atmosphere spreading along the album. This album is a shining sword of true melodic metal raised against false metal posers. The other songs I didn't mention are not fully melodic but they are totally good death metal of course. This is the second album after Gallery that every metalhead should listen at least once in their lives before death; then they will not need to look back again! Review by: 3X314N5 Dark Tranquillity: The mind's I Evaluation: 10/10 Why am I placing this score on this album? Well, first of all, it's a Dark Tranquillity album, and Dark Tranquillity have been along their careers, or at least since they released that masterpiece titled "The gallery", the best extreme metal band. To go on, it's the first DT album I've ever listened to, and I listened it before listening to prior metal bands of the style, like At the Gates. So, this album has a special meaning for me. But the main reason is that the album kicks ass, and if it has been forgotten, then it has been unfairly forgotten. This album mixes again melodic metal lines with the power of death metal, but this time, unlike a major part of "The gallery", extreme assumes the main role. This creates a fast, heavy and "throat-cutting" album, but far more atmospheric and emotional than what we are used to see in the extreme metal scene. I don't have a favourite track, but I think the one that expresses the album's feeling best may be "Insanity's crescendo". "Hedon" is also a song that will stick to your brain like a metal shrap (ouch). And if you don't like the music, then you have at least the chance to read the booklet, with an awesome art design, and displaying eleven pieces of chaotic unleashed poetical genius by Mikael Stanne and Niklas Sundin. If you like Dark Tranquillity's melancholic yet powerful, chaotic yet harmonic, deadly yet vital lyrics, this album is, once again, pure genius. And the music speaks for itself, though I don't quite recommend to expect the bright melodies of "Haven" or "Damage done". This can be quite a depressive album! Review by: razorhead
