I was looking forward to the re-release of this album and have enjoyed it quite a bit but it doesn’t compare to the original in my opinion. I have always been curious what Stormblast would sound like with better production and if they had just done that I might have rated this album higher, but they had to go and make so called "improvements" to it.

I thought the original was a masterpiece of the symphonic black metal genre and really didn’t need any changing just a little better production which I will give them credit for the production is very good. I was mostly disapointed in the insturmental changes to the album. I noticed they changed several riffs in the songs which I felt that they were great to begin with. The keyboards which gave the album a very cold dark feeling are a lot less noticeable than before which I didnt like. Really the only instrumental improvements I have noticed were the drums which are of course done by Hellhammer of Mayhem so you really can do no wrong there.

The DVD that came with the album is a bit of a nice feature if you enjoy the new Dimmu stuff but you'd think that a DVD that comes with a Re-release of Stormblast would have them playing songs from Stormblast. I'll give them credit the DVD does sound damn good I dont think I've ever heard Dimmu songs preformed this clearly before and it actually made me enjoy songs I haven’t liked in the past. The DVD was filmed at a 2004 Ozzfest concert in San Antonio, Texas where most of the people in the audience have probably never heard of Dimmu Borgir or black metal in general and really kind of view them as a just a band that comes before Slayer.

Obviously I was disappointed by this release but I have still enjoyed listening to it a little but I probably wouldn’t have bought it if I had known what I know now. I would still recommend this to fans of the new Dimmu records or others who could never get into the original version of Stormblast because of the bad production.

8 out of 10

Nowere near as good as the original, but its alot better than anything they have done in years. the songs have been completly redone to sound more professional and the production is very clear, but the unprofessional poor production is what made the original album as great and dark as it was. It was however a good effort at redoing it and is worth buying because the album contains some of the old magic which are contained in the old riffs.

Compared to the original Stormblåst album, this re-recorded version is both better and worse depending on what aspect of the music you are judging.

The sound quality is as clear as it gets, compared to the original Stormblåst, which suffered from much worse recording methods. No longer is one agonized by the lack of clarity in a guitar riff, random background fuzz, and the other nitpicks that plagued the original Stormblåst. Another thing I noticed is that the guitars seem to sound much fuller in the re-recorded version than the original. It also sounds a little deeper to me, and there is more clarity between notes. Over all, the guitars in the redone Stormblåst are much better than in the original. Hell, the guitars in the redone version are fucking amazing, and make for some great black metal. Another thing that was better in my opinion was the orchestrations, which sounded much better done in general, and the recording picked up their sound much better. Thankfully, the orchestration does not dominate the metal, like what happened with Progenies of the Great Apocolypse, but they sound as well done as in Progenies. Oh, before I move on, the keyboards are also much better in the redone version, and they bring a lot of atmosphere to the music when combined with the fuller guitars. It makes for one amazingly good sound.

What kills the redone Stormblåst for me are the vocals and the drums. In the remastered version, the vocals are much less "above" the music and deeper than in the original Stormblåst. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, it sounds really good. What kills me about it is that the lyrics sound the same throughout the entire CD, whereas in the original one the vocals were much different from song to song. The original's vocals sound full of rage and anger, while the new one's vocals just sound grim, but without the anger that drove the original Stormblåst. The other thing that kills me about this one, as a drummer, is the drums in the new Stormblåst. The fills are much better sounding than on the original, but apart from that, the drums are way too repetitive. In the original Stormblåst, it sounds like the drummer was having a lot of fun with his ride cymbal, and the drums sounded more like they were getting beaten rather than played for a concert or something. They just lack the driving power that the first Stormblåst had, in my opinion.

Over all, this is worth buying and listening to by anyone who liked Stormblåst. Don't think of it as a remade Stormblåst when buying it, since although the songs share the same general structure, the two versions are different enough that someone who hasn't heard either more than say, 5 times, couldn't tell that they are different versions of the same album. It sounds more like it was completely redone keeping the same guitar parts and lyrics and the rest thrown out.

Is this Dimmu Borgir, was the first thought that came to my messy mind, but after I heard the DeathCult crap and all the crap made since 1996 (and including the Enthroned Triumphant one)I lost the faith in this band... but this isn´t sounding so crapy but still it retains all the modern age black metal imaginery... and suddenly it came, I know why this doesn´t sound so crappy this is a song from that forgotten album called Stormblast, and suddenly a remake is born, and yes it´s quite good in the Dimmu standards, not as good as the original, but who cares about the past anyway, the good production values give the songs all the strenght that maybe they wanted to achieve at that time, but it has lost the feeling of the "rawness" that this band once had, a sound that made them deserve an important place in the Norwegian metal legends...
The album is good, but not as good as the Remastered Aspera Hyems from Arcturus, remade or not, but it´s worthy than this, because this only proves that when all the ideas are gone, let´s pick a good album to remake it and answer a lot of silly questions that ussually the fans do, like how will sound the old Dimmu songs with the new Dimmu sound?
the answeris quite simple: Godless Savage Garden!!!
