This is true black metal for me! Great atmosphere, mixing aggression and sorrow, simple a masterpiece. Nothing to do with Dimmu of nowadays.

This is a great Dimmu album. The songs are very beautiful, mixing the fast and heavy black metal with gothic keyboards. This is a great cd!

This is so fucking good. There isnt a bad song on the whole album. and i can listen to it how many fucking times and still every time its just as fantastic.
true black metal. shagrath sings better on Stormblåst than on För Alltid i think. Alt Lyst Svunnet Hen is the first song , and i took me buy storm. there is just a atmosphere that cant be described.
melodic , fast and slow with alot of piano. thats very nice , i love piano. And When nr6 goes on Stormblåst i feel this energy in my body. its fucking amazing how people can make music like this! this must be one of the best albums ever done by anyone
forget about bob dylan. Dimmu Borigr are the kings of black metal

You really want to know my thoughts on this one? Probably not but I'll tell you anyway. It's has beautiful orchestration, deasent guitar riffs and Shagrath's vocals can really scare the fucking shit out of any cunt. The downside of this album is the sound quality of it - in some songs there is a bit scratching in the background which can at times piss me off, but other than that it is a great album by, in my opinion the best black metal band ever to walk on this fucked up world. Yeh!

In 2002, the name "Dimmu Borgir" represents to black metal fans the same thing that the name "Metallica" represents to fans of heavy/speed metal; selling out and over-commercialization. And like Metallica before them, Dimmu Borgir had quality music that was accepted by elitist scenesters prior to "selling out." This is the quality music. With "Stormblåst," Dimmu Borgir successfully synthesizes baroque and black metal into one satisfying aesthetic. It is easy for me to imagine "Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen" being an orchestral piece, just like it's easy for me to imagine "Sorgens Kammer" being an instrumental metal track. The melancholic keyboard/piano passages serve to underscore the minimalist riffs found here. It is almost impossible for me to believe that the men responsible for the level of musicality achieved on this album would go on to write and record "Spiritual Black Dimensions" and "Godless Savage Garden." The atmosphere created here has never been duplicated on a subsequent Dimmu Borgir album. Take my advice and pick this one up: you'll thank me for it.

Stormblast kick ass!

This is a great album! But For All Tid was better I think.

Great album - one of the best of these times - it passed the test of time not like all the other DB albums (especially that the new ones totally suck)

One of the greatest black metal albuns of all times, this is simply a masterpiece in every and single way. 11/10

Review by: vampyric

This album is simply one of the best Dimmu borgir album ever! The album starts with melancolic piano-intro and after that begins one of the most legendary Dimmu borgir song Alt lys er svunnet hen (=All light has faded away) First of all I pay my attention to the very melancolic, harsh, sad and gloomy atmosphere. Then I notice that piano is very dominating instrument in this album especially in the very gloomy instrumental song "Sorgens kammer" (=Chamber of sorrow) But unfortunately this song is took from the legendary amiga-game!
I must say that this is the only Dimmu borgir-album where is nothing joyfull or funny details. This album is full of sorrow and angst. Maybe two last songs are the worst of this album, but they are also good in some way. One of the greatest Dimmu-albums ever! I like every Dimmu-album but this is the most gloomy and agressive of them. I love this one!
9/10

Dimmu Borgir's only work of value imo. Stormblast is very soft compared to their later releases, yet this is their only work I can actually experience as music. The guitars and drum are oppressed by the keyboard which is always on top of everything, playing sweeping majestic passages. The drummer isn't as good as barker, but his style integrates nicely into the musical whole. Although this release seemed very nice at first listenings, nowadays I don't think it's worth your time.

Before I heard this album I had Enthroned Darkness Trumphant, Spiritual Black Dimension and Puritanical Euphoric Misanthrophia. So this album was so different than those albums. When I listened Stormblåst first time I was like "what the hell? is this really Borgir?" But when I had listened this album few times, it started to sound ok. There is couple songs in this album wich are good, but here's so many poor ones too. And the vocals of Shagrath are not so good than I hoped to be. Sound guality is kinda poor too. But this is ok album and I recommend this to every Borgir fan...

In my opinion : For all tid, and Stormblåst are Dimmu Borgir of its greatest. Before it came a teen idol. Nothing to do with nowadays Dimmu Borgir.
I would think DB, as one of the greatest blackmetal
bands. But because the guys, who made this rather Excellent album, are also responsible for the nowadays Dimmu Borgir. I cant believe they are the same guys :(

Stormblast is in my opinion one greatest black metal cd ever made....

There is a feeling I get everytime I listen to this album...Buy it! This is the best!

Review by: Krigkrist

Silenoz does the vocals on this and For All Tid...anyone who says otherwise is misinformed and just plain wrong. Great album one of the best two albums Dimmu Borgir have ever released, the other one is For All Tid of course.

Review by: deathshandbag

This is dimmu borgirs best, no doubt about that. Alot of atmosphere, keyboards and great screams from Shagrath. The lyrics are also quite funny...
My favorites here are "alt lys er svunnet hen", "broderskapets ring" and "da den kristne satte livet til"

i never really understood the amazing hype with dimmu.. after a couple listen , DCA got boring... same with PEM... the one cd that got me hooked was EDT.... yet i still was not satisfied.... i then took a look at this record and now i realize why dimmu was considered such a GREAT black metal band... nothing can re-create anything on this album..

This album is extraordinary... it hasn't nothing to do with crappy releases such as "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" or "Puritanical..." (or any other cd released after 1996). The original style of Dimmu Borgir was an atmospheric black metal full of melancholy and dreaming sounds. Their first two cds remind me more the moment of the dawn rather than the nighttime. "Stormblåst" (in English: storm blows), as well as "For All Tid" (=forever), captures the undefinite atmosphere of the unique moments soon before the sunrise, creating a very particular music... My favourite songs are "Alt Lys er Svunnet Hen" (=all the light has faded away) and "Når Sjelen Hentes Til Helvete", but it is the album in its whole that is excellent. After this cd the band signed for Nuclear Blast and began to produce bombastic extreme (NOT black!) metal albums, selling millions copies around the world but renouncing to the incredible sensibilty which pervades every single note of their first two astounding cds.
My rating: 96 out of 100.

STORMBLAST 8/10 (Very Good)

FILE: Very melodic, dark, and eerie black metal.

THE GOOD...
All though this album is extremely mellow it is quite refreshing. Shagrath's growls fit perfectly with the dreerie atmospher of the cd. Silenoz's clean vocals fit perfectly as well. The guitar distortions are very uncut sounding and very interesting as well. Drumwork is OK.

THE BAD...
Track #4(the piano solo) drags on to long for my taste. Other than that the album is pretty much flawless! (I guess it could have been a little faster too... I prefore music to be more intense but, this album is good as is!)

THE UGLY...
Nothin... DIMMU RULES

THE POPULLAR TRACKS INCLUDE...
#3 Nar Sjelen Huntes Til Halvete
#5 Da Den Kristine satte livet til
#6 Stormblast
#7 Dodsferd

STORMBLAST 8/10 (Very Good)

Dimmu Borgir - Stormblåst
=========================

The first Dimmu album i got was this one, and i was surprised by the sound of this compared to Dimmu's new sound. And that's certainly not negative !
This album carries the true Norwegian black metal feeling with it, because of the old-school production, and because all lyrics are in Norwegian.

The opener on this album must be one the best songs on this album, it starts with a very nice piano intro and then moves on to a faster part which is rare on this album. The two passages marking the borders of this song deserve the most credit, the intro creates a nice atmosphere, but the outro creates an even better one.

Then a slower song, like most songs on this album. The piano in this song is great, this is one of the first black metal albums on which i've heard such a great use of a piano sounds.

Then another quite slow song starts, which is faster then "Broderskapets Ring" though and in which the keyboards seem absent at first. But then the piano bridge comes in and showcases another great placement of this instrument. Then the silence is broken and a killer blast beat comes in, which is also a bit rare on this album. The fury of the drums goes on while Shagrath's primitive grunt rages on. And then the song ends as suddenly as it begun.

Then comes the beautiful piano work "Sorgens Kammer" supported by a small orchestra. If you're looking for some fast metal, you better skip this song. You have to be in the right mood to listen to this since six minits of piano aren't ment for everyone. I personnally am able to enjoy this from time to time.

Then another faster song follows, which seems to have lyrics about the same theme as those on "Antikrist". I could be wrong of course since i speak very little Norwegian. This again is a 3:00 minits song.

Then the title song follows, which to me includes to best of Shagrath's vocals on this album. With growls and whispers this song also has the most variated vocals. This together with the guitars and drums form the highlight of this album. Which is probably the reason why they named the album after this song.

Then the song with the most aggressive lyrics follows (i've read the translation). The music, which is in my opinion not aggressive enough for this type of lyrics, is quite good anyway. With it's nice bass solo's and the cry of the owl it creates a very mystic atmosphere. But again, this music is not appropriate for this kind of lyrics in my opinion.

Then another more faster song follows, again complete with blastbeats and everything. The vocals seem a bit different, and with a higher pitch on this song, which is a nice change. The music then turns out really great towards the end which is a nice surprise too.

Then we start to near the end with this song, which is very variated and more emotional then the other songs. Like "Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen" and "Stormblåst" this song jumps out from the rest. It also does that by having an abrupt ending, instead of a fade out.

Then the last song already, which definetely has the most excentric intro. From the beginning till the end, this song keeps surprising me. Another example of this is the hard blastbeat that follows directly after the intro. Then another very dark passage follows, similar to the outro on the opening song. The passage that comes more to the end and is led by the piano is yet another surprise that just connects to the dark passage which comes around for the 3rd time on this song. And then it ends itself and the album with the same surprise attack which it used to start.

This album is a masterpiece with exstensive use of piano and variated drums. The album keeps you tied to it, but starts to lose its interesting element towards the end. Nevertheless, buy this album and don't let yourself be decieved by the newer records by Dimmu. This album and For All Tid are the start of Dimmu. And hell what an intrance into the black metal world they have made !

I love this cd...I believe it is Dimmu Borgir's best album, and it is much better than any of their more recent releases although I still do like most of those as well.

These first two albums are among the best black albums ever (altough they have bad sound). All other albums are worth a fuck.

One of my personal favourate Dimmu-album. I don´t think I have to write anything about the sound of this album because I´m sure everyone already have heared it.
So I just wanna say: Stop spreading bad reputation of this group. Just because a lot people which don´t know what metal even is are listening to Dimmu we shouldn´t stop listening to them.
( I understand if many dislikes their newer albums but that doesn´t make you to stop listen to the first ones ;))
Tnx for great website.

Hail!

It is one of the best black metal albums

I think the song antikrist is the best song on that fantastic album!!!!!

Never liked this band. Don't know why. I listen more exterme and much softer ones as well. Maybe it's because they've always lacked this unique element I know they are doing it as the first in the world. Their music is always 'safe'. "stormblad' i consider their best issue. It's worth listening.

very good. melodic and gloomy. the production isn't horrible, the lyrics are amazing.

For me, this what I consider to be Dimmu's last great record before they started using electronics and doing numerous covers. The entire album is amazing and is definately my favorite. I don't speak a word of Norsk, but I don't care, this album is amazing!

Dimmu Borgir. The name is synonymous with "sellout" or "mainstream" within black metal circles. They have come to represent many things, both good and bad, to many people. All hyperbole aside, I feel this is Dimmu Borgir's magnum opus. Many have griped about the subpar sound quality, but once you have listened to this album enough, it is not as glaring a problem. Everything just sort of flows together. In fact, this album reminds me a lot of early Limbonic Art, where the keyboard melodies are the most prevalent and the guitars, bass, and drums are sort of a rumbling undercurrent, creating a very flowing, majestic sound. The atmosphere of this album would never again be duplicated in another Dimmu Borgir album; it is very depressive, gloomy, melancholic. Shagrath's screams were at their most "black metallish". So if you are curious to see why Dimmu Borgir were once very respected within the black metal scene, pick this up.

A fantastic bm cd!

Dimmu have do it again!

This is again a good cd, agai n, the sound is not the best, and again you are taken back to norways land!

With that cd have dimmu created one of the most importent cd's in the black metal history!

All bm fan must have that cd!

I think this is one of the best black metal albums ever, but people should not say that Dimmu Borgir is sellout just because they started making different music afterwards. The best tracks at this cd are Dødsferd and Alt lys er svunnet hen. Sorgens Kammer is also a great track, but Stian Arstad was caught taking the melody from a video game. Whatever? some thing that is impressing is that the lineup at Stormblåst is totally different from For All Tid. Shagrath played drums and here he plays the guitar and sing for instance. Ps. today I got this album signed by Silenoz AND Shagtath :D:D:D Proud to be a Norwegian

Review by: CreepingDeath

I like Norwegian blackmetal. It is my favourite music, shaaaaaaah... And I like Dimmu Borgir. It is symphonic blackmetal, but it is not true norwegian blackmetal... But IT IS A NORWEGIAN BLACKMETAL. This group is very dark and different... The old Stormblast(1996) is better because:
a)music- gitars, hound barking, melancholy atmosphere
b) more orchestral music( et.c. Sorgens Kammer)
The new Stormblast(Re-edition)(2005)is different, of course; but I like this album, because:
a)cleaned sound and vocals
b)better atmosphere(not very melancholy and dark)

This is a true peice of atmospheric melancholic and medieval black metal! It's amazing how good they were before they threw in the bag and sold their souls to nuclear blast and made generic poppy metal....anyway,this carries an epic as fuck atmosphere so definatly worth it! (im glad they at least changed their logo after this :)

production not is perfect and clear but melodies real.great album.

Review by: Beyto

The bands best and last album until they become a commerical parody for aspiring gothic adolescents. Like other reviewers mentioned the cold nordic atmosphere is perfection of the genre. Classical music even comes to mind with the piano sections & song structures. A must own CD for metal enthusiasts or those who appreciate killer music!
