To be said the best album of Immortal. I disagree with this statement (Pure Holocaust is my favorite), but it sure is a fucking great album. This also contains some classic Immortal songs: Battles In The North and Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark). Its a damn fast and heavy album, it nearly hurts your ears when you listen to it, it's a shrill CD, but very, very good.

When I first listened this record in my stereo system, my eardrums were suffering for severe shrillness. But still, I got used to it and now consider that as one of the best Immortal albums. It contains pieces of true musical wisdom, such as "Battles in the North", "Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms", "Cursed Realms of the Winterdemons" and the last but not the least "Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)". The last I mentioned is the best Immortal song after "Antarctica" from the new album. All Immortal fans probably has this record and be god d*mn proud that you have it!

This is the best Immortal record. No wonder "Blizzard Beast" sounded like shit, no other Immortal release can beat this masterpiece. Songs like "Battles in the North", "Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms", "Descent into Eminent Silence", "Cursed Realms of the Winterdemons" and "Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)" guarantees the quality of this piece. The sound is absolutely awesome! It's rather damaging, but hell... it's superb! Covers are the best ones ever released in black metal scene. Hail Abbath and Demonaz! Brutal piece, best in 1995. Kick some winter ass.

At first I was slightly disappointed when I put this album in my stereo. You won't find the overwhelming and godly riffs that Pure Holocaust showcased so proudly, nor its immeasurably interesting drumwork. The riffs are now generally based off of simple power chords (P5s, P4s, and P3s), although some songs try to be a bit more adventurous. I also noticed that there seems to be less layering of musical tracks on this album, which is unfortunate because it sounded so mind-blowing on Pure Holocaust.

Bitching aside, I noticed later that the songs flow quite nicely and the guitar sound is so thick, shrill, furious, and cold! The drums are very fast, but it's a shame that they sound like a cardboard box most of the time. Abbath's bass playing is masterful, as you hear him well on Cursed Realms of the Winterdemons and Circling Above In Time Before Time (by the way, you can hear a variation on the "Last of the Mohicans" theme near the end of this song).

Be sure to listen to such elegies to the raging Northland as Throned By Blackstorms (the best song on the album, in my not so humble opinion), Moonrise Fields of Sorrow, Cursed Realms of the Winterdemons, and At the Stormy Gates of Mist.

On a side (and unimportant) note, Osmose must have fucked up with the tracklisting on the CD liner, because NONE of the songs, save the intro and outro, correspond with the list.

Anyways, this is an essential Norsk Black Metal album, but if you don't own Pure Holocaust yet for some inexcusable reason, get that first, no matter how "classic" you think the overrated Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark) and Battles In the North are.

Stormy, noisy and violent black metal from the Norwegian snowmen. The sound is more clean compared to other Immortal-albums, in this one you have not doubt that you are trapped in the middle of a hellish snowstorm and I’m sure fans will enjoy this brutal blizzard-sound. Normally I would give “Battles in the North” 8 out of 10, but because of the butt-ugly and extremely stupid-looking pictures on the cover, I give it 7 out of 10 instead.

Don´t confuse your mind. ¨BATTLES IN THE NORTH¨ represent the begining of the Norwegian Black Metal Style, evil speed atack!!! this production is the rock where other bands will support in the future. is a masterpiece!!!, we don´t compare with ¨pure holocaust¨, Battles in the north sounds really different, extremelity, speedly, dark and coldness, I need to say more??... Hail IMMORTAL, Hail the true North Black metal!!!.

Just another album from Immortal, nothing special in my opinion, though the music video from Blashyrkh (mighty ravendark is the worse music video ever done! Good album for those who already know they like Immortal, others should try something else first.
7/10

Am I the only one who regards this as Immortal´s best album? Don´t get me wrong, I REALLY love the others (apart from Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism ), but this is sooo raaw. Raw Raw Raw Raw Riffing. Non-stop. Takes time to get into but then the songwriting will shine through (don´t let "songwriting" put you off - this is one mean album), and personally I don´t understand all this bitching about the production, which i think is totally in your face...if you´ll pardon the expression. A classic. 10/10.

a production that sacrifice the cleaness in the name of the coldness, and songs played worse than in pure holocaust take to "battles" the crown of best immortal album. anyway, an immortal masterpiece

Definately the best Immortal album. Humming guitars and frost bite inducing coldness encapsulate the listener in a snowstorm of grimness. Raw and powerful, savage yet hauntingly epic. Almost the perfect black metal album, it makes "Blizzard beasts" sound positively mainstream... Did i mention the speed? Abbath drums like a demon to weave the albums strangulating mist around the listener.
A classic album from a time when black metal was dark, mysterious and magical.

Battles in the North+ Cursed blah blah Winterdemons+Blackshyrkh = 10/10. Pure raw hateful speed. A classic. The best of Immortal for me. Pure Holocuasy had annoying sounding. I heard that Abbath was drumming on this one. If its true he is an excellent drummer. Hear the first song. Incredible speed. Faster than overrated Panzerdivision Marduk. Abbath and Demonaz are faster... :)
