Since I only have this copy of Lunar Strain and Subterranean, I'll write my reviews of both of them here. | Lunar Strain: An excellent album, very well played and some real promise of being a superb band. Key songs on here being of course "Behind Space," "Lunar Strain," "Starforsaken," well, fuck it, every song on here is good, even including Dreamscape, Everlost (Part II) and Hargalaten, which in my opinion add a very musically savvy touch to the brutal power of the other songs on the album. The only drawback of this album is the production, which does the guitars nearly no justice at all. Even so, they do manage to stand out, as In Flames has always been a guitar-oriented band. Subterranean: A priceless EP. Much better production and the same level of musicianship as on Lunar Strain, if not better because the drumwork has been taken over by Daniel Erlandsson of Arch Enemy fame. Every track on here is an absolute meisterverk that was followed up by a supreme effort in The Jester Race. The final two tracks were previously unreleased tracks that get put onto the Jester Race, with The Inborn Lifeless being renamed as Dead God in Me. I find that the Dead Eternity version present on here to be better than on Jester Race because of its more prominent bass part, but both are must-haves. If you don't already have Lunar Strain or Subterranean, this entire album is a must-have in itself as a reminder of where In Flames truly came from. Review by: Rob
