Vintersemestre - 'Jaaverisaatana,' a MCD which has 6
tracks, including an intro and outro, and lasts for just over
19 minutes. As you may have guessed from the band name and the
title of the MCD, this band are Norweigian. I am assuming that
Vintersemestre is a one man band, too, though I may be wrong.
There are basically no lyrics or anything useful in the CD booklet.
This release is on MMI Records.

I'll start by saying that this is nothing special, and it's not
an essential purchase. So if you're only after the elite cream
of the crop when it comes to black metal, then there are better
CDs to spend your money on. But some of you might want to give
this band a go, there are some interesting enough moments, and
the musicianship is okay. The production is of course a little
poor, and the drums sound a bit crud. Here's a brief description
of each track.

1. Those Tears Of Lilith

At first, I thought this total synth intro sounded a bit cheap,
but it's not too bad. It's certainly nothing too special, though,
and anyone with a reasonable knowledge of piano/synth would be
able to play it themselves.

2. Firedance (Jaa)

As with all the actual songs, this is mainly quite fast, and
the vocals are your standard black metal style. The synth parts
sound a little cheap again, not quite as symphonic as the band
were probably intending. The main melody to this song is quite
boring.

3. The Wisdom Of Usuluh (Veri)

This is a bit more like it. The riffs are more inspired, and the
song flows a bit better. There is also a slower, menacing section
with some synth, but this time the synth isn't too bad.

4. The Darkness Of Asath (Saatana)

All these songs are quite short, around the 3 to 4 minute mark,
which is good since they would've got far too boring has they
been significantly longer. Anyway, this one is more of the same,
at the same speed as the previous two, and again, there is some
synth which tries to be symphonic but doesn't quite cut it. Some
of this music would be more effective if the band chose to have
more of the slower parts... or perhaps I'm just getting old, or
something.

5. Silent Tongues

The vocals are more in the Helheim/Behemoth vein here, screamed
very corsely. Again, fairly melodic, but nothing to make you sit
up and take notice.

6. Abigar

This is basically the outro, and is one of the more palatable tracks,
since it is purely accoustic guitar. A nice track to finish on.

This band is Finnish, NOT Norwegian! The band title is in Finnish and means "Icebloodsatan", the title of the CD is in Swedish (Finland's second language) and means "Winterholiday". So as you might guess this is not a serious band...

Actually, Vintersemestre are known for their dedication and seriousness towards what they do. The name "Vintersemestre", was chosen due the members annual hiking trips in midwinter's merciless conditions in Finnish Lapland.

Harsh and grim winter black metal at it's unique best. The band was formed in 1991.
