Great album. So old school !!!! Damn these guys can do so much great stuff when they want to. Hail Darkthrone !!! Fuck the new Breed !!! | Review by: darkann This release could be a joke for many people, and the lyrics related to something fun rather than black metal ideology, but I really enjoy DARKTHRONE adds punk elements into their music. Songs like The Cult of Goliath, Too Old Too Cold, Graveyard Slut, Whiskey Funeral are very fine for me. Review by: Ahlan I think that even the "new fans" of Darkthrone will be disappointed with this cd. Avoid this album - if you buy/download it, you will regret it... 3/10 Review by: masterwojtek Darkthrone is back to deliver us their 12th full length album which is again filled with some high class raw black metal. The album starts of with the song "The Cult of Goliath" which is a good opener for this album, raw, up-tempo and with some nasty vocals. The second song is "Too old, Too Cold" which could also have been heard on the last EP (as titletrack). It's nice track with some very simple but efective guitar- and drumlines. Another classic that has to be mentioned is "Graveyard Slut" with drummer Fenriz on vocals. I really prefer this version above the version on the "Too Old, Too Cold" EP. With the voice of Fenriz underneath it, it is just more raw and more an eighty's punk song, again a very simple and repetitive guitar and drumline. That's i think also the strength of Darkthrone. They make those simple lines to some real strong black metal songs, the same as Satyricon is doing nowadays. And i must say they do it pretty well. The style of this album is moved a little more to punk/crust but (in my opinion) at the same time it is still pure raw black metal. If you like your black metal punkish or rock 'n roll (think of Carpathian Forest for a good example) you have to listen to this black unholy pearl. Definitaly one of the best black metal releases this year so far. Rating: 9/10 Review by: khold666isgreat This is a great, very raw new album of the true Darkthrone. The tracks on the "Too old, too cold" - demo are included in this cd so if youre not a diehard fan its enough only with this fullength album. I must say all tracks are really great and absolutely not boring at all. Comparing to "Sardonic Wrath" this album is better. "Raw" is probably the best way I can find explaining this album. Better guitar-riffs and rawer voice. 8/10 Review by: gustav_ Wow, looks like Darkthrone grew some balls and started making real music. The old Darkthrone was utter shit, in my opinion. Sure, generally black metal has pretty bad production, but at least most black metal has the actual music (not just playing everything really really fast and 'screaming', which sounds more like some emo kid who just got kicked in the nuts). Darkthrone, in my opinion, has really evolved. The riffs on the album are fucking awesome, they're really catchy, it sounds almost like punk metal. Nocturno finally started using a better voice (why he didn't sing like this before, who knows) and the production is good enough to hear the instruments but still raw enough to feel 'grim'. All in all, an excellent album. Review by: False Messiah you know, I think I misjudged Darkthrone greatly. A while ago I bought A Blaze In The Northern Sky, Soulside Journey, and Under A Funeral Moon, and I utterly loved it, so I bought their entire catalogue. And let me tell you, once you give it a couple listens, the awesomeness really starts to shine through. I still think that their newer releases are superior in sound and structure, but I have grown a new appreciation for their older material. So I apologize to anyone who was insulted or offended by my previous review. After the new appreciation for their old stuff, I give this album an 8/10, because it just can't beat Blaze Review by: False Messiah
